Just yesterday, Samsung posted a huge profit - in fact its record profit and not surprisingly this was powered mostly by smartphone sales. Profit alone was at a whopping $4.7 billion for this quarter. So check this out, Samsung sold around 36.5 million smartphones while Apple sold around 37.04 million iPhones. I still think Apple has an awesome record keeping in mind that it sells just one models - The iPhone as compared to the multiple models that Samsung sells in its Smartphone series powered by Android.
With Apple and Samsung battling it out for the top spot, I guess the smaller players like HTC, RIM and even the Nokias and Ericssons must be really feeling the heat. Whenever I go out with my friends and colleagues, I notice either an iPhone or a Samsung being the smartphone of choice. And now with the introduction of new models like the Samsung Galaxy Note, the competition just got stiffer. So who are these "smaller players" actually going to target?
I don't see the battle between Samsung and Apple cooling off anytime soon. Just in the 3rd quarter of 2010, Samsung overtook Apple in terms of smartphone sales and subsequently Apple took back the crown in Q4 yet again. With new models planned from both sides we're bound to see a string of see-saw battles between the 2 companies in the near future.
All things said and done, my money is still on Apple even with Tim Cook as the new CEO. Let's hope that he's able to carry on the legacy of Steve Jobs - hopefully these are not too big shoes to fill for him. As for Samsung, you've got to prove to me that you can create a wealth of applications similar to the iTunes App Store to convert me.
Are you up to the challenge, Samsung?
